Decode
Parent Only: Prepare to Teach with 5 Minute Mojo
INSPIRATION: “Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.” – Jim Rohn
DAILY PLAN: You made it to decoding. Great job! Here’s where the fun and love of reading beginning. We designed Message from the Pride using nonsensical words to teach your child how to decode. You and your child are now ready to read. Have fun!
Step 1 – Together, read the daily clue with your child. Explain to your child that today you will learn if each animal has a vowel or a consonant secret letter.
Step 2 – Identify vowels and consonants. Vowels are marked with a “Sun” icon and the consonants are marked with the “Moon” icon.
Step 3 – Play The Game. This is your child’s independent learning time. Guide your child to find Messages from the Pride. Make sure your child taps/clicks on the picture of the red lion.
Step 4 – After your child plays the game, together identify vowels and consonants again. This is a lot of information so repetition is very important. Have fun. Make animal sounds. Ask specific-animal questions. Enjoy this time together. Vowels are marked with a “Sun” icon and the consonants are marked with the “Moon” icon.
TEACHING TIP: Having a kid is the perfect excuse to, well, act like a kid. Embrace the moment — they won’t be young forever — and get on your child’s level by turning even the most mundane activities (like learning how to tie shoes) into a game. Making learning fun is the best way to get them excited about the process.
HEALTHY SNACK: Bananas – It never hurts to play with your food: make monkey noises with your child as you peel your bananas and eat it like a monkey! Add a little nut butter for a richer, more filling snack.

Take 2 cups of whole milk, 5 ounces of bittersweet chocolate (broken into small pieces), and a couple tablespoons of brown sugar (optional). Heat the milk in a medium saucepan. Once warm, whisk in the chocolate pieces and the brown sugar until completely melted and steaming hot. For a thicker hot chocolate, simmer on a low boil for about three minutes. HEALTHY SNACK: Seaweed Strips – Nori, or seaweed, is easy to find in Asian supermarkets or the international section of your grocery store. Seaweed is actually a delicious and healthy snack that will make your child feel just like Otter! You can either buy roasted seaweed snacks at stores like Trader Joe’s, or you can easily make your own. On a lined baking sheet, brush 6 nori strips with water and lay them on top of one another, so they are “buddied up.” Now stuck together, cut the stack into one-inch strips. Do this with the rest of the remaining nori sheets. Then, brush each “chip” with a light layer of sesame oil, and sprinkle with salt. Bake at 275 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, until the strips turn a deep, glossy green.

Step 1 – Together, read the daily clue with your child. Draw the letters in the air to spell the nonsensical word. Get warmed up and ready to learn with the animal inspired yoga pose. It’s great to say the letter sound /v/ while you’re doing the pose. Have your child repeat the sound /v/.
Step 2 – Identify vowels and consonants. Vowels are marked with a “Sun” icon and the consonants are marked with the “Moon” icon.
Step 3 – Play The Game. This is your child’s independent learning time. Guide your child to find Messages from the Pride. Make sure your child taps/clicks on the picture of the vulture. After your child plays the game, choose to play the App or do the Safari Guide.
Step 4 – Together, create a definition for the nonsensical word “ven”. Make a video with your child to record the new word! You can use the videos to create a portfolio of progress to track your child’s progress. Ask your child to make the sound /v/ and say vulture, /e/ and say elephant, and /n/ and say naked mole rat.
Passport: Ask your child to read the word ven. Write the definition of ven in your passport.
TEACHING TIP: Talk to your child about the process of learning to read. Make sure you explain that you read from left to right and top to bottom.
HEALTHY SNACK: Compost Cookies — Cookies are always a treat, but you can make them healthier by including “reused” ingredients. Start with a basic oatmeal raisin cookie recipe. Ask your kids to look around the house and find some things that would go well in the cookies. Dried fruit, peanuts, chocolate chips, cocoa nibs, and even pretzels make good fillings. Cut down on fats by using applesauce, yogurt, and neutral oils in place of butter. Cut down on the sugar called for in the recipe as well (it’s usually more than enough).

HEALTHY SNACK: Crazy Cubes – While your child is learning about water, you can have healthy fun with it. Chop up whatever berries you have on hand – strawberries, blueberries, even frozen berries in the freezer — and put a few small chunks in each section of an ice cube tray. Your child can help fill the tray with water (practicing conservation skills by trying not to waste any!) and put the tray in the freezer. The frozen cubes will make a glass of water fun and appealing for them! Plus, it will help them steer clear from wanting sugary, colored drinks. And don’t forget to drop a few Crazy Cubes in your own drink, Mama, whatever it may be!

HEALTHY SNACK: Rainbow Toasts — Make a healthy vegetable ratatouille to keep on hand as a flavorful treat. Slice zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant, and tomatoes in rounds and pieces that are about the same size. It takes a bit of time, but cook them slowly in a pot with olive oil for an hour or two, adding salt, pepper, and thyme. The vegetables will slowly break down and become a delicious rainbow ragout. Stir occasionally to make sure they don’t burn on the bottom of the pan, and add a little water if the veggies are becoming too dry. One it has cooked down, you can store it in tupperware in the fridge for a week or so. Slice a baguette into small pieces and scoop the ratatouille on top of each toast for a colorful and healthy snack.
