Monkey
Parent Only: Prepare to Teach
INSPIRATION: “They may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel.” –Carol Bunchner
DAILY PLAN: Get ready to teach. Read the daily clue. Review the yoga pose and the letters for today. Let your child pick an activity or project to do together. Look at the activities and projects ahead of time. Gather any materials you will need. Use positive reinforcement and celebrate all successes, no matter how big or small. Remember to read the Rain Forest eBook before bed. You don’t have to do everything listed below. Just remember it’s 30 minutes a day to reading readiness!
- Ready. Set. Read – Together, read the daily clue with your child. Draw the letters in the air. Get warmed up and ready to learn with the animal inspired yoga pose. It’s great to say the letter sound /m/ while you’re doing the pose. Have your child repeat the sound /m/.
- Activities and Projects – Spend quality, family fun time together on the adventure of a lifetime without leaving your home. You and your child have step-by-step instructions with pictures to offline, custom designed activities and projects that spark creativity! You and your child will have fun together while learning about the animals and the world we share with them.
- Digital Safari + Passport – Find the animal of the day in the Digital Safari. This independent online learning time teaches your child phonemic awareness and science. Encourage your child to learn and have fun exploring the Rain Forest. Help your child to find Level 2: Monkey. Make sure your child taps/clicks on the picture of the monkey. After your child completes the Digital Safari, it’s time to earn Fun Minutes with the Digital Passport! Your child chooses the animal of the day. And when your little one is done, they earn Fun Minutes. The Digital Safari and Passport helps your child develop self confidence needed to read!
TEACHING TIP: Having a kid is the perfect excuse to, well, act like a kid. Embrace the moment — they won’t be young forever — and get on your child’s level by turning even the most mundane activities (like learning how to tie shoes) into a game. Making learning fun is the best way to get them excited about the process.
HEALTHY SNACK: Bananas – It never hurts to play with your food: make monkey noises with your child as you peel your bananas and eat it like a monkey! Add a little nut butter for a richer, more filling snack.
*Please do not give your child the Healthy Snack suggestion if he/she is allergic to any of the ingredients.
SUGGESTION: Together, make a video with your child to record the discovery of monkey! Record your Q&A Session, drawing letters in the air or while you talk with your child about monkey. Ask your child to make the sound /m/ and say monkey. You can use the videos to create a portfolio of progress to track your child’s progress. Print the Scoreboard in the Digital Library. Color monkey on the Scoreboard. Celebrate!

HEALTHY SNACK: Dreamy Creamy Hot Chocolate – Moms already know that chocolate is a health food, right? Actually, cocoa has great antioxidant properties and is a classic treat to allow your kids. Done the French way, hot chocolate is a rich, luxurious drink to enjoy in small doses, and one that also provides calcium, Vitamin D, and lower doses of sugar than the average mix. Take 2 cups of whole milk, 5 ounces of bittersweet chocolate (broken into small pieces), and a couple tablespoons of brown sugar (optional). Heat the milk in a medium saucepan. Once warm, whisk in the chocolate pieces and the brown sugar until completely melted and steaming hot. For a thicker hot chocolate, simmer on a low boil for about three minutes.
