Africa is a varied environment, and this lesson will introduce your chil to Hippopotamus and her Secret Letter “H.” The Hippo is one of the River Keepers of the Pride, and she has a very important job of guarding the Pride’s water. Remember to talk to your child about what he or she has already learned about water in Level 2: what does your child remember about water in the rainforest? Use the “Africa” book, watch “The Secret Letter H” video, and use the online workbooks and activities to keep your child on track with the adventure.
Teaching Tip:
Try to provide as many visual alphabetic cues for your child as possible. Spell words in big letters while you are coloring together. Make food into a letter as you eat. When you see a word on a road sign, sound it out for your child and point to the letters so they follow along. The real-world examples will be very effective.

Activities
Water Saver Superheroes- Teaching conservation is fun and easy. Bring your child outside with a small pail, and show them how to collect rainwater in the bucket. The next time it rains, go outside and show them how they helped collect rainwater! If it is particularly dry, have your child help you water the grass or your plants to show how all living organisms need water to survive. If it’s winter, grab some snow and watch it melt into water inside. Conservation starts at home, too. Show your child how to turn off the sink, especially when brushing his or her teeth: he or she will love to play with the faucet, and you can shower your child with praise when they turn off the water correctly.

Healthy Snack
Hungry Hippo Mix- Make a basic and healthy trail mix for hungry hippo munching! Combine a cup each of raisins or any other dried fruit, chocolate or yogurt chips, peanuts, Cheerios, or even popcorn. Pack the mix into small servings in tupperware or plastic bags for an on-the-go treat.
