5 Minute Mojo
Time to move underground with the Naked Mole Rat and the Secret Letter “N”. Naked Mole Rat is the Archaeologist for the Pride, and he digs up letters and clues in the dirt. Naked Mole Rat has a very important role in the Pride and he helps your child learn how to explore in unexpected places. Your child will continue to learn the other letters of the Sunmoona Pride, as well as new scientific concepts about the Earth.
Teaching Tip:
Helping your child develop small motor skills at home is another way to help their literacy learning process. Setting up a kid’s craft table with plenty of washable markers, crayons, pencils, and paper is a great way to make writing easily accessible and attractive to your child.
Momspirations:
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin

Activities
Underground Zoo(Materials: Plastic two-liter bottle, sand, dirt, worms) — Even though you might not have real naked mole rats on hand, you can create a little underground zoo with your child at home after a quick visit to a garden supply store. Cut the top off of a clear two-liter soda bottle. Let your child add alternating layers of sand and dirt. Add the worms on top, along with a little water to keep the soil moist. The worms will get right to work and start digging! You can make them feel safer by covering the outside of the bottle in dark construction paper, since worms are used to darkness. After a few days, you can observe the worms digging intricate paths around the bottle. Draw and journal your observations with your child.

Healthy Snack
Chocolate Dirt Pots– Sometimes, we just need a sweet treat! Dirt Pots are a classic kid snack, and they are certainly appropriate for the day’s lesson with Naked Mole Rat. Make a batch of chocolate pudding and scoop into clear plastic cups. Crush a bag of dark chocolate cookies (Oreos are classic, but you can find healthier options in the natural foods section of your store). Sprinkle the cookie “dirt” on top of the pudding cups. Finally, add a gummy worm or two sticking out of the dirt cup!
